Jeremy, I see the first flush is over, on the iphone sales front.

"Apple sold fewer iPhones in all of July than it did in the first two days that the iPhone was on store shelves. Moreover, the total number of iPhones sold in July was below the pace needed to meet Apple's target of selling 1 million by the end of September."

Not surprising, really. The mobile phone business is a mature one, and it'll take a long time to shift people over - if it happens at all.

Apple's bizarre pricing and network strategies are not helping. The phones won't be subsidised as part of a mobile operator price plan. Apple are saying they are so marvellous that they'll attract customers who will pay full price. We'll see.

The point is, though, that the iPhone is just the beginning. In the long run, it'll probably do ok, but it's great great grandchildren will, given time, change our world.

Thanks Phil. Nice analysis and made me want to get me grubbies on one. I thought I picked up in the stratosphere that not all was well with the phones? Perhaps it was the networks issue you mentioned and not the actual devices.

Since we have a lot of early adopters at eBay, they're all over the place so I also had the opportunity to play with one. I had the same experience as you -- prior to playing with skeptic about how good it really could be, and completely converted after a few minutes. Things just work as they should -- the scroll bar going away when you're not using it, the page "bouncing" when you're at the top to indicate you can't scroll any further... Absolutely amazing. Oh, and they can make phone calls too :)

I agree that using the iphone felt a lot like doing magic. It was wonderful. But the owner of the iphone still had to have another phone in his pocket, because he couldn't just put his sim card in the iphone and use it to make phone calls. Now wouldn't *that* have been the perfect user experience?
