How UX designers get a “seat at the table”

Getting a “seat at the table” is a dream/complaint UX designers have been famous for making, for years now. It’s shorthand for something like…

“Why does my org do such weird things? Why am I excluded from the real decision-making process?”

I ended up doing a talk about this for the Friends of Figma Meetup in Krakow.

The answer is more complicated than I could really cover 20 minutes. But I chose to focus on:

  • The fundamentals of money, strategy and metrics that designers need to understand
  • The basic professional skill of getting things done, while staying sane
  • The need to focus effort in areas that match your organisation’s strategy
  • How designers generate unique value by mastering speed, vision and simplicity.

Big thanks to Backbase for hosting, Friends of Figma, Kraków for sponsoring and publicity, and Patryk Szymański for making it happen!
